The story

Listen for a moment. Somewhere ahead, a steam whistle sounds over the rooftops. The ground under your feet changes from plain pavement to a warm, reddish surface. The air smells of popcorn, and something sweeter, like vanilla. Crowds move slowly here, as if everyone has quietly agreed not to hurry. You are standing at the edge of Disneyland in Anaheim, California. This is the place where Walt Disney first tried to build a whole world, not just a film.

Before you walk in, look up at the railway station that sits above the entrance. A train runs on that embankment and circles the entire park. The raised earth is not only for the tracks. It forms a berm, a long wall of soil and planting. It hides the parking lots, the freeways and the hotels outside. Once you pass under it, the modern city almost disappears. That was the idea from the very start.

As you go through the tunnels, look for a small plaque above you. It welcomes visitors to leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy. Those words still describe the layout of the park. On one side lies the past, on another the future, and between them lie fairy tales. The tunnels work like a curtain in a theatre. You walk through darkness, and then the stage opens in front of you.

In the early 1950s, this land was mostly orange groves and walnut trees. Anaheim was a quiet farming town. Walt Disney wanted a clean, friendly park where parents and children could have fun together. Many bankers thought the plan was foolish. To raise money, he agreed to make a weekly television show. The show promoted the park while it was still under construction. Millions of Americans watched it rise before they ever visited.

The park opened in July 1955, and the first day did not go well. The weather was very hot. Far more people arrived than expected, partly because of forged tickets. Some fresh asphalt was still soft, and women's heels sank into it. Drinking fountains were scarce, and several rides broke down. Staff later gave the day a dark nickname, Black Sunday. And yet, visitors kept coming back. Within weeks, the problems were fixed and the crowds grew.

Now walk onto Main Street, U.S.A. It is a picture of a small American town around the year 1900. Walt Disney based it partly on Marceline, Missouri, where he spent part of his childhood. Notice the gas lamps, the horse-drawn streetcar and the shop fronts. Here is a detail many visitors miss. The upper floors of these buildings are smaller than the ground floors. This trick is called forced perspective. It makes the street look taller and more welcoming, but never overwhelming.

Look at the upper windows along the street. Many of them carry painted names, like signs for old businesses. These are tributes to people who helped build and run the park, including artists, engineers and executives. Each name is a quiet thank-you in gold lettering. Then find the fire station near the town square. Above it, Walt Disney had a small private apartment. A lamp burns in its window. Staff keep it lit in his memory.

At the end of the street rises Sleeping Beauty Castle. Many people expect something huge, but it is surprisingly modest in size. Forced perspective helps here too. The stones near the top are smaller, so the towers seem to climb higher than they are. The castle has a working drawbridge. It is said to have been lowered only twice, once on opening day and once when Fantasyland reopened after a major rebuild in the 1980s.

The castle sits at the centre of a hub, like the middle of a wheel. From here, paths lead out to the different lands. This plan was new for its time. Older amusement parks often felt like a maze of rides. Here, you can always find your way back to the centre. To your left lies Adventureland, with its jungle boats. Farther on are Frontierland, New Orleans Square and the rest.

In New Orleans Square, you will find Pirates of the Caribbean, which opened in 1967. It was one of the last attractions that Walt Disney worked on personally. He died in December 1966 and never saw it finished. Nearby, the Haunted Mansion stands like a grand southern house. Both rides use clever lighting, music and moving figures. These animated figures were an early form of robotics, and they changed how theme parks tell stories.

Now look toward the snowy peak that rises above Fantasyland. That is the Matterhorn, modelled on the famous mountain in the Swiss Alps. The bobsled ride inside opened in 1959. It is often described as the first roller coaster built with tubular steel track. That design later became standard for coasters all over the world. So this small mountain in California helped shape thrill rides everywhere. Listen for the screams that echo from its slopes.

The park has never stopped changing. Walt Disney said it would never be finished, as long as there was imagination left in the world. Tomorrowland has been rebuilt several times, because the future keeps moving. In 2019, a large new land opened, based on the Star Wars films. Disneyland is also special for another reason. It is the only Disney park that Walt Disney himself walked through. Many fans feel his presence most strongly here.

Before you move on, pause near the castle and turn back toward Main Street. Watch the people around you. Grandparents walk with grandchildren. Couples share a snack. Someone is wearing mouse ears for the very first time. Listen again for that train whistle above the berm. When you finally walk out under the station, notice how the real city returns, little by little — the traffic, the palm trees, the ordinary afternoon light.
