Siam Paragon

In the heart of the modern shopping district, a vast, gleaming mall stretches over several floors, its halls lined with luxury boutiques, cinemas, restaurants, and even an aquarium in the basement. This is Siam Paragon, one of the largest and most upmarket shopping centres in the city, and a temple of modern consumer Bangkok.

It sits in the Siam district, the throbbing retail centre of the city, where several huge malls cluster around the elevated railway stations and crowds of shoppers, students, and tourists flow between them. Paragon is the grandest of the group.

Inside, the mall runs from international luxury brands at one end to a vast food hall and supermarket at the other, with cinemas, an event hall, and shops of every kind in between. It is built for spending, browsing, and escaping the heat in equal measure.

One genuine surprise lies in the basement: a large aquarium, one of the biggest in the region, with tunnels, sharks, and rays beneath the shopping floors, a family attraction tucked under the boutiques.

The food hall is a destination in itself, a sprawling space offering everything from cheap, excellent Thai dishes to international restaurants and a high-end supermarket, so even non-shoppers come to eat.

The mall is also a social hub, air-conditioned and open late, where young Bangkokians come to meet, eat, watch films, and pass the time as much as to shop, a window into modern urban life.

It connects directly to the elevated railway, so it is effortless to reach, and it links by walkways to the other great malls of the district, forming a whole climate-controlled shopping world above the busy streets.

For visitors, it is less a sight than an experience of contemporary Bangkok, the glossy, modern, consumer city that exists alongside the temples and markets, and a welcome cool refuge on a hot afternoon.

The contrast with the city's old markets is sharp: where the markets are hot, chaotic, and full of haggling, the mall is cool, ordered, and fixed-price, two faces of how the city shops.

It is, frankly, a shopping mall, and a very large one, so its appeal depends on your taste; but for the aquarium, the food, the cinema, and a sense of modern Bangkok, it earns a stop, especially when the heat outside is fierce.

A few practical notes. The mall is free to enter and open late; the aquarium and cinemas are ticketed. It sits right at an elevated railway station, so it is easy to reach, and the food hall is a reliable, cheap place to eat well.

Ride the escalators up through the gleaming floors, eat in the great food hall, and watch the young city at leisure around you, and the modern, consumer side of Bangkok comes into focus. Siam Paragon is the city's shopping heart. When you step back out to the railway, the heat and the street return at once.
