The story

In the middle of the river that runs through the old centre lies an island given over almost entirely to art and antiquity, five great museums clustered together on one spit of land. This is Museum Island, one of the most remarkable concentrations of museums in the world.

The island was developed over the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a deliberate quarter of culture, a place where a rising nation gathered its collections of art and archaeology into a row of grand temple-like buildings by the water.

The five museums together span human creativity across thousands of years, from ancient Egypt and the Near East through classical antiquity to nineteenth-century painting and sculpture, so the island is a survey of art and history in one place.

One museum holds reassembled ancient monuments, another the treasures of ancient Egypt including a world-famous painted bust of a queen, another the great nineteenth-century paintings, and others classical and Byzantine art, each a major collection in its own right.

The buildings themselves are grand, columned, temple-like structures, designed to glorify culture and learning, and several have been carefully restored after wartime damage, so the architecture is part of the experience.

The whole ensemble is recognised as a World Heritage Site, valued as a unique record of how museums and the idea of public culture developed over a century and a half, all gathered on one island.

It is far too much to see in one visit, so the island rewards choosing one or two museums rather than attempting all five, and a multi-museum ticket helps those who want to range across them.

Between the museums, the island offers riverside walks, lawns, colonnades, and the great cathedral, so it is a pleasant place to stroll and pause as well as a place to go indoors.

The island sits at the heart of the historic centre, by the old quarter and the grand boulevard, so it folds into a day exploring the core of the city.

The combination of so much art and history on one small island, ringed by the river and crowned by the cathedral's dome, makes it one of the defining sights of the city.

Cross onto the island, choose a museum or simply walk among the grand facades by the river, and the ambition of a city that gathered the world's art onto one island becomes clear. When you leave across the bridge, the row of great museums stands behind you over the water.
