The story

Listen for a moment. Underneath the music drifting from the loudspeakers, there is another sound — the sea. This park sits on reclaimed land at Penny's Bay, on the northeast edge of Lantau Island. On a humid afternoon, the air carries salt and popcorn in equal measure. Behind the turrets and rooftops, green hills rise steeply into the clouds. Few theme parks anywhere have a backdrop like this one. Keep those hills in view. They shape how this whole place feels.

Many visitors arrive here by train, and the journey is part of the show. The Disneyland Resort Line branches off at Sunny Bay station. Its carriages have windows shaped like Mickey Mouse's head. The handrails carry the same three-circle outline. Small bronze figures of Disney characters sit inside glass cases on board. It is a short ride, only a few minutes. But by the time the doors open, the ordinary city already feels far behind you.

Hong Kong Disneyland opened in September 2005. It was the second Disney park in Asia, after Tokyo. The project is a joint venture between the Walt Disney Company and the Hong Kong government. In fact, the government holds the larger share. That makes this park unusual — a piece of public infrastructure as much as a business. When it opened, it was also among the smallest Disney parks in the world. Much of its story since then has been about growing into its space.

The early years were not easy. Critics said there was too little to do for a full day. Attendance did not match the hopes of the planners. So the park began to expand, land by land. New areas appeared through the 2010s, each one carefully designed for this audience. The park you are walking through today is quite different from the one that opened in 2005. It is larger, denser, and much more confident in its own identity.

According to widely repeated reports, the designers took feng shui seriously from the very start. Feng shui is the Chinese practice of arranging buildings to bring balance and good fortune. The main entrance is said to have been angled slightly to improve the flow of energy. Some accounts also say that certain buildings avoid a fourth floor, because the number four sounds like the word for death in Cantonese. These details are often told, so treat them as part of the park's folklore.

Walk through the gates and you reach Main Street, USA. It is a gentle copy of a small American town around the turn of the twentieth century. Look at the shopfronts, with their painted signs and striped awnings. The street draws your eye forward, toward the castle at the far end. This is a classic Disney trick. The view pulls you in before you have even decided where to go.

That castle is the Castle of Magical Dreams. It opened in 2020, replacing the smaller Sleeping Beauty Castle that stood here before. The new design does not belong to one princess alone. Instead, each tower and detail celebrates a different Disney princess or queen. Look closely and you may spot a snowflake, a rose, a seashell, or a tiara worked into the decoration. The castle now rises high enough to hold its own against the Lantau hills behind it.

Here is a surprise that many visitors miss. Head toward Mystic Point and you will find Mystic Manor. It opened in 2013, and it was designed only for this park. Instead of the haunted house found at other Disney parks, this is the home of an explorer named Lord Henry Mystic. His mischievous pet monkey, Albert, opens a magical music box. Chaos follows. The story was shaped partly because ghost stories can feel unlucky to many local guests. The playful score is by Danny Elfman.

Nearby is Grizzly Gulch, a dusty Wild West mining town. Its roller coaster, Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars, has a famous moment. Halfway through, the train stops, and then rolls backward into the dark. Listen for the screams that carry over from the track. Then there is Adventureland. On the Jungle River Cruise, boats run in Cantonese, Mandarin, or English. Each skipper tells the jokes a little differently. It is a small detail, but it shows who this park was built for.

Tomorrowland holds another first. The Iron Man Experience opened here in 2017. It was the first Disney park attraction based on a Marvel character. The story is set in Hong Kong itself, so you fly over the city's harbour and skyline. For local guests, it is a rare pleasure to see their own home on a Disney screen. For visitors, it offers a second, faster look at the place you have just travelled through.

Then comes the newest land. World of Frozen opened in November 2023. It was the first land anywhere themed to the Frozen films. You walk into the kingdom of Arendelle, with its steep wooden roofs and painted gables. Mountains climb behind the village, and they blend into the real hills of Lantau. Here, the borrowed scenery and the built scenery are almost hard to tell apart. Pause at the edge of the village square and see if you can find the join.

The park also changes with the hours. In the morning, the light is soft and the queues are often shorter. By mid-afternoon, the heat and humidity settle over everything, especially in summer. Shade becomes precious, and so do the misting fans. As evening falls, the castle lights up. The crowds gather on Main Street for the night show. Families sit on the kerb, children on shoulders, everyone looking the same way at once.

Before you go, turn around for a moment. Look past the rooftops to the hills, and listen again for the sea beyond the music. This park began as a small, uncertain experiment on reclaimed land. It grew into something shaped by its city, its languages, and its beliefs. As you walk back toward the Mickey-shaped windows of the train, notice how quickly the music fades. The hills stay with you a little longer.
