The story

Stand at the base and tilt your head back. The concrete shaft rises straight up, pale against the desert sky. At the very top, a wide pod sits like a crown on a column. On a windy afternoon you can hear the air moving around the tower, and if you wait a moment you may hear something else from far above. It is the faint sound of people screaming, and they are doing it on purpose.

Welcome to The Strat, at the northern end of the Las Vegas Strip. For most of its life this place was called the Stratosphere, and many locals still use that name. The tower opened in 1996. It rises about 1,149 feet, or roughly 350 metres. That makes it the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States. It is taller than Seattle's Space Needle, and from here it is easy to see why it became a landmark on the skyline.

The story of this tower begins with a casino owner named Bob Stupak. Before the tower existed, this site was home to his casino, Vegas World. Stupak was a showman with large ambitions. He wanted something that people could see from across the valley. He imagined a tower that would pull visitors north, away from the busier resorts in the centre of the Strip. The idea seemed wild to many people at the time.

The project was expensive, and the road to opening day was not easy. Stupak brought in partners to help pay for construction, and the costs kept rising. There were also questions about height. The tower stands close to the flight paths of the city's busy airport, and aviation officials had concerns about how tall it could safely go. In the end, the tower was built to the height you see today. The finished building was a remarkable piece of engineering, even when its finances were difficult.

Here is a detail that surprises many visitors. Most of the famous Las Vegas Strip is not actually inside the city of Las Vegas. The big resorts further south sit in unincorporated parts of Clark County. The Strat is different. It stands inside the city limits. So in a quiet way, this tower is one of the few major Strip landmarks that truly belongs to Las Vegas itself. It also marks a kind of border, where the Strip begins to give way to the older streets toward downtown.

In 2017, a company called Golden Entertainment bought the property. A few years later the resort received a new name, The Strat, along with a long list of renovations. The new owners refreshed the rooms, the casino floor, and the restaurants. The tower itself stayed the same. The new name is shorter, but the old word still shows the original dream — a building that reaches up toward the upper sky.

Now think about the journey to the top. Fast elevators carry visitors up the shaft in well under a minute. Many people feel their ears pop on the way. The doors open onto the observation levels, with indoor areas behind glass and outdoor decks open to the air. On a clear day the view stretches across the whole valley. You can follow the line of the Strip south, see the grid of the city spread out, and look toward the mountains that surround Las Vegas on every side.

The view changes completely after dark. From up here the Strip becomes a long river of light. Hotel towers glow in gold, white, and red. Cars move along the boulevard like small moving sparks. Downtown, to the north, shines with a different pattern of older neon. Many visitors say the night view helps them understand the city in a new way. From the ground, Las Vegas feels like a series of separate resorts. From the tower, it looks like one enormous, connected machine of light.

And then there are the rides. The Strat is famous for putting thrill rides at the top of the tower, high above the street. One ride, called Big Shot, launches riders straight up the mast at the very top. Another, called X-Scream, pushes a car out over the edge of the tower and tips it toward the ground below. A third, called Insanity, swings riders out on a long arm and spins them in the open air. Those screams you heard at the start? They come from up there.

For some visitors, even that is not enough. The tower also offers SkyJump, a controlled descent from high on the tower down to a landing area near the base. Jumpers wear a harness attached to a cable system that slows their fall. It is not a free fall in the true sense, but it feels very close to one. If you stand near the landing zone, you can watch people arrive at the ground. Their faces usually tell the whole story — a mix of relief, shock, and joy.

Not everyone comes here for adrenaline. Near the top of the tower there is a revolving restaurant called Top of the World. The dining room turns slowly, so the view outside the windows moves while you eat. Over the course of a meal, diners can watch the city pass by in a full circle. It is a quieter way to experience the height. The motion is gentle, and many guests barely notice it until they look up and see that the mountains have moved.

Back at ground level, the tower sits on top of a full resort, with a hotel, a casino, shops, and places to eat. In many ways it feels more relaxed than the giant resorts further south. The crowds here are often a mix of hotel guests, thrill seekers, and people who simply came for the view. You will hear the familiar Las Vegas sounds of slot machines and music, but the main attraction is always above your head.

Before you leave, step back out to a place where you can see the whole tower again. Look at the long, smooth shaft, and the wide pod at the top. Remember that a single casino owner once dreamed this up on a stretch of road that many people ignored. As you walk away, glance up one more time. Somewhere high above, a ride is probably moving, and someone is screaming into the desert air.
