The story

A short way from the busy shopping street, the city gives way to a vast green garden of lawns, lakes, and towering trees, loud with birds and shaded by rainforest. This is the Singapore Botanic Gardens, more than a century and a half old and the country's first place to be honoured as a World Heritage Site.

The gardens were founded in 1859, in the colonial era, and have grown into a great tropical garden and a serious centre of botanical science. They played a key role in the region's history, including early work that helped establish the rubber industry across Southeast Asia.

Unlike a formal European garden, much of this one is lush and tropical, with broad lawns running up to stands of huge old trees and patches of preserved rainforest. A small piece of original lowland rainforest survives within the gardens, a rare thing in a modern city.

The most famous part is the orchid garden, a hillside ablaze with thousands of orchids in every colour, the national flower among them. It is the one section that charges admission, and it is worth it for the sheer density and variety of blooms.

The gardens are free to enter and open from early until late, and locals use them as a daily green space, jogging, walking, and picnicking. That mix of world-class collection and everyday park is part of their charm.

Lakes dot the grounds, home to turtles, fish, and birds, with a bandstand on a rise and shaded paths winding between them. The gardens are large, so you can find quiet corners even when the main lawns are busy.

Music and events have long been part of the place, with concerts held on the lawns, and families spreading out on the grass on weekends to listen. It is as much a social space as a botanical one.

The trees are among the great sights, some of them enormous tropical giants over a century old, with buttressed roots and high canopies. Walking among them, especially in the rainforest patch, gives a sense of the forest that once covered the whole island.

The gardens sit at the edge of a famous shopping district, so they make an easy escape from the heat and crowds of the city, a cool, green pause within a short ride of the centre.

Time of day matters in the tropical heat. Early morning and late afternoon are far more comfortable than the fierce midday sun, and the birdsong is best early. Rain showers come and go, so a small umbrella is wise.

A few practical notes. General entry is free; only the orchid garden is ticketed. Wear light clothes and comfortable shoes, carry water, and allow a couple of hours at least, as the gardens are larger than they first appear.

Find a bench beneath a great old tree, with the lawns around you and birdsong overhead, and let the heat and noise of the city fall away. These gardens have grown plants, knowledge, and quiet for more than a century and a half. When you step back out toward the shops, the green stays with you for a while.
