The story
Rising above the low rooftops of the old city, a green hill crowned with a gleaming golden tower draws the eye from streets all around, an artificial mountain raised in a famously flat city. This is the Golden Mount, the hilltop shrine of the temple of Wat Saket, and one of the finest viewpoints in old Bangkok.
The mount is man-made. In a city built on flat, soft ground, with no natural hills, a great mound was raised over the nineteenth century to lift a golden chedi, a bell-shaped relic tower, high above the rooftops, a feat that took repeated effort in the unstable earth.
The golden chedi at the summit is the focus, said to enshrine a relic of the Buddha, and its gilded surface catches the sun and is visible from far across the old town. It is both a place of pilgrimage and the city's old high point.
Reaching it means a climb, up a winding stairway of a few hundred steps that curls around the green slope. The ascent is gradual and shaded, lined with bells that visitors ring as they pass and small shrines and waterfalls set into the hillside.
The ringing of the bells along the climb gives the mount a particular sound and rhythm, and the gradual reveal of the view as you rise makes the ascent feel like a small pilgrimage rather than a simple staircase.
At the top, a terrace rings the golden chedi, where visitors walk, pray, and take in the panorama. Because the old city has so few tall buildings, the outlook over the rooftops, temple spires, and the river is wide and open.
The view is the great reward: a low sea of old Bangkok spread below, with the spires of the royal city, the river, and the modern towers on the horizon, one of the best places to grasp the shape of the old town.
At the foot of the mount lies the rest of Wat Saket, an old and important temple with its own halls and monks, often quieter than the climb, and worth a look before or after the ascent.
Once a year a great temple fair surrounds the mount, when the chedi is wrapped in red cloth and the streets fill with stalls and crowds, one of the liveliest religious festivals in the city.
The mount sits in an old quarter near the canal and the metal-spired Loha Prasat, away from the riverside crowds, so it pairs naturally with a wander through a more everyday, historic part of the city.
A few practical notes. There is a small charge near the top; dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and climb in the cooler morning or late afternoon, carrying water for the steps.
Climb slowly, ringing the bells, and step out at the summit by the golden tower to look over the whole old city, then watch the light change over the rooftops. The Golden Mount lifts you gently above the flat city to see it whole. When you descend, the rooftops you surveyed close back in around you.
