The story

The climb begins with worn stone steps. They rise between old houses, narrow and close. Washing hangs from some windows. A cat watches from a doorway. The noise of the port fades behind you. This is Le Suquet, the old town of Cannes. It sits on a hill above the bay. With each step, the view behind you grows wider.

Le Suquet is the oldest part of the city. Long before the grand hotels, this hill held a small fishing village. People built here for safety, above the water and the marsh. The streets are steep and winding by design. They follow the shape of the hill. Cars cannot pass through most of them. You climb on foot, as people always have.

The houses press close on either side. Their walls are pale stone and worn plaster. Shutters in faded blue and green frame the windows. Flowers grow in pots on the steps. The lanes are cool and shaded, even at midday. Now and then a gap opens between the buildings. Through it you catch a sudden bright view of the sea below.

At the top of the hill stands a square tower. It is the Tour du Suquet, built by monks in the fourteenth century. The monks came from the Lerins Islands offshore. They used the tower to watch the coast for danger. It rises about twenty meters above the hill. From its base, the whole bay opens out before you.

Beside the tower stands an old church. It is called Notre-Dame de l'Esperance, Our Lady of Hope. It was built over many years, finished in the seventeenth century. Its style is late Gothic, plain and strong. Inside, the air is cool and still. The walls hold simple statues and old paintings. People still gather here for services and quiet prayer.

The old castle on the hilltop now holds a museum. It is the Musee de la Castre. The building once belonged to the monks of Lerins. Inside are objects gathered from around the world. There are instruments, masks, and old weapons. From the museum garden, the view stretches across the bay. The square tower stands close beside it.

Reach the top and stop to look. The whole of Cannes lies below you. The red roofs of the old town fall away toward the port. Boats fill the harbor in neat rows. The long line of the Croisette curves along the shore. Out on the water sit the Lerins Islands. On a clear day, the hills beyond the bay stand sharp.

The streets of Le Suquet are full of small restaurants. Tables spill out onto the steps and corners. In the evening, candles flicker on the cloths. The smell of garlic and grilled fish drifts down the lanes. This is a good place to eat after the climb. Prices here are often gentler than along the seafront below.

By day, the old town is quiet. Residents go about their lives. You may hear a radio, a closing shutter, soft talk through an open window. Tourists are fewer here than on the Croisette. The pace is slow. Take your time on the steps. Stop often. There is no reward for rushing up this hill, and much to miss.

The light changes everything here. In the morning, the lanes are cool and blue with shadow. At midday, the stone glows pale and warm. In the evening, the setting sun turns the walls to gold. The hour you choose shapes what you see. Many people find the late afternoon the finest time to climb.

Look down at your feet now and then. The streets are paved with old stones, smooth from long use. Steps are uneven, worn into curves by countless feet. Iron rings and old doorways mark the walls. Each lane has its own small details. These are easy to miss if you keep your eyes only on the view ahead.

Le Suquet holds the memory of Cannes before its fame. The fishing village came first. The glamour came much later, down by the water. Climb the hill and you touch the older story. Sit by the tower as the light fades. Below you, the modern city glitters. Up here, the quiet of an older time still holds.
