The story
Listen for a moment. Under the music drifting across the lawns, you can hear water moving, the soft hiss of fountains and the rush of streams cutting through the gardens. Then, somewhere overhead, a roar of wheels and a chorus of screams rises and fades. The paths here are wide and curving, and the light bounces off pale stone and brass. You are standing in Universal Epic Universe, the newest theme park in Orlando, and one of the most ambitious ever built.
This park opened in May 2025. It is the third theme park at Universal's Orlando resort. Universal Studios Florida came first, in 1990, and Islands of Adventure followed in 1999. For a quarter of a century, those two parks sat side by side. Epic Universe broke that pattern. It sits on its own land, a few miles south of the original parks, with its own entrance, its own hotels, and its own skyline rising out of the flat Florida ground.
The design idea is simple to describe and hard to build. At the centre is a hub, a large green park called Celestial Park. Around it, four separate worlds open like doors. Each world is closed off from the others, so that when you walk through, you leave the rest of the park behind. Universal calls these entrances portals. Think of the hub as a train station, and each portal as a platform to somewhere very different.
Celestial Park itself is worth slowing down for. Many visitors rush straight through it, heading for the big rides. But this is the one area designed for wandering. It has gardens, fountains, and pools, with a theme of stars, planets, and the night sky. Look at the patterns set into the paths and the shapes of the water features. Many of them follow celestial forms. At night, the fountains and lighting change the mood completely.
Here is something many people miss. Celestial Park is not only a garden. It holds one of the park's headline rides, Stardust Racers. This is a dueling coaster, which means two tracks run side by side, and the trains race each other. At certain moments, they seem to come close to touching. Watch from the paths below. The two trains swing past each other in the sky, and the riders on each side often wave or shout across the gap.
Now to the portals. The first, for many families, is Super Nintendo World. You enter through a green warp pipe, a direct nod to the classic Mario games. Inside, everything is bright and blocky, with question-mark boxes, coins, and mushrooms. The headline ride is Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge. This portal also has a Donkey Kong Country area, with a mine-cart coaster called Mine-Cart Madness. The track is designed to make the carts look as if they are jumping across gaps.
The second portal is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic. This one surprises fans of the earlier Potter areas in Orlando. It is not set in Hogwarts or in Diagon Alley. Instead, it is set in Paris, in the 1920s, the world of the Fantastic Beasts films. The streets carry the look of old Paris, with ironwork, cafés, and tall facades. The main ride, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, takes guests down into the British Ministry of Magic.
The third portal moves to a cold northern coast. How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk is based on the animated films. The village here is built in a Viking style, with timber, carved posts, and rough stone. It is a lighter, open area, and it suits younger visitors well. There is a family coaster called Hiccup's Wing Gliders. There is also a live show with dragon puppets. Listen for the roars — they sometimes carry across the whole portal.
The fourth portal is the darkest, and that is the point. Dark Universe brings back the classic Universal monsters — Frankenstein's creature, Dracula, the Wolf Man, and others from the black-and-white horror films of the twentieth century. The village is called Darkmoor. It has crooked roofs, gas-lamp lighting, and fog. The main ride is Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment. There is also a coaster called Curse of the Werewolf. This area is theatrical and spooky, so check with young children before entering.
There is a quiet reason these monsters matter here. Universal built much of its early film identity on horror. In the 1930s, the studio released the films that made these characters famous around the world. So Dark Universe is not just a theme. It is a return to the studio's own roots. Standing in Darkmoor, you are looking at a love letter to the films that helped build the company behind the park.
One more surprise sits right next to the gates. The Helios Grand Hotel is built into the edge of Epic Universe itself. Guests at this hotel have a direct path into Celestial Park. This kind of in-park hotel is rare. Look back at its tall facade from inside the gardens. It frames the hub, and in the evening its windows light up behind the fountains. Even if you are not staying there, it is part of the view.
A few practical thoughts as you explore. The park is large, and the portals are spread out around the hub. Plan your day by portal rather than by ride, because walking back and forth adds up. Drink water often, because the Florida sun is strong, even outside summer. Shade is easier to find inside the themed worlds than out in the open gardens. And give yourself time to simply stand still in each portal. The detail is dense.
As you walk on, take one more look around Celestial Park. Notice the sound of water again, the curve of the paths, the far-off rumble of a coaster. Behind each portal there is a different world. But here in the centre, the park asks very little of you. Find a bench. Watch the light move across the fountains. Then choose a door, and go through it.
