The story

Listen for a moment. Somewhere ahead, a coaster train roars past with a deep metallic rush, and a wave of distant screams follows it. Closer by, there is the slap of water against a wooden dock, the smell of sunscreen and warm pavement, and the Florida heat pressing on your shoulders. Welcome to Universal Islands of Adventure, a theme park built not as one place, but as a chain of separate worlds around a single lake.

The park opened in 1999 as the second gate of what is now Universal Orlando Resort. Its neighbour, Universal Studios Florida, was built around the idea of movie sets and soundstages. This park took a different path. Instead of studios, it offered islands, each one a self-contained story with its own architecture, music, and even its own style of rubbish bins. Today a third park, Epic Universe, joins them nearby, but this lagoon-side ring remains the resort's most varied walk.

Here is the simple trick to understanding the layout. The lands sit in a loop around a central body of water. If you keep walking in one direction, you will eventually pass through every island and arrive back where you started. There is no single hub you must return to. That means you can choose a direction at the start of the day — clockwise or anticlockwise — and let the park unfold in order, one world handing you to the next.

You begin in Port of Entry, a gateway designed to feel like a crossroads harbour town. Look at the buildings around you. They borrow from many places at once — North African arches, Asian rooftops, Mediterranean plaster, weathered signs in a mix of styles. Above it all rises a lighthouse, the park's welcoming beacon. The idea is that travellers from everywhere have washed up here, and you are about to set sail with them.

Take one path, and the colours suddenly turn loud. This is Marvel Super Hero Island, painted in the bold primary tones of a comic book page. Overhead runs the bright green track of the Incredible Hulk Coaster, which launches riders up a steep incline rather than slowly climbing a lift hill. Nearby, the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man mixes moving vehicles with large three-dimensional screens. Even the shop fronts here look like they have been inked and coloured by hand.

Next door, the jokes get softer and wetter. Toon Lagoon draws on classic newspaper comic strips, and you can see it in the details — speech balloons hanging in the air, cartoon panels on the walls, sound effects written across signs. Two of the park's water rides live here. On one, you drift in round rafts through churning rapids. On the other, you ride a log flume themed to a Canadian Mountie cartoon. Plan to get wet. Not a little wet... properly wet.

Now the mood changes again. Skull Island brings you into the world of King Kong, with dark stone, twisted roots, and a temple entrance carved with fierce faces. The attraction here, Skull Island: Reign of Kong, opened in 2016 and takes guests in large expedition trucks through the jungle. The sound design is worth noticing even from outside. Drums, distant roars, and creaking gates set the tension before you have joined the queue.

Beyond it, a towering gate announces Jurassic Park. Here the soundtrack swells, palm fronds rustle, and the buildings echo the visitor centre from the films. The newest major thrill in this land is the Jurassic World VelociCoaster, which opened in 2021 and runs low along the lagoon shore. Stand near the water and you will see trains skim past at speed, with raptors as the story's hunters. For gentler moments, there is a play area and a river cruise with a famous plunge at the end.

And then, as you turn the corner, Scotland appears in the Florida sun. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Hogsmeade, opened here in 2010 and changed theme park design. Snow seems to cover the steep rooftops of the village, even on the hottest day. Above the shops rises Hogwarts Castle, which houses Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Nearby, Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure opened in 2019 and quickly became one of the park's most popular rides.

Here is a detail many visitors miss. At Hogsmeade Station, you can board the Hogwarts Express and travel to King's Cross Station in the neighbouring park. On the other side waits Diagon Alley, part of Universal Studios Florida. The journey is part of the show — the windows of your compartment play scenes from the story outside. The ride itself is the connection between two parks, so you need a ticket that covers both.

Keep walking, and the stone grows older. The Lost Continent draws on ancient myths and legends, with Greek and Middle Eastern influences in its columns, statues, and market stalls. The great draw here is Mythos, a restaurant set inside a carved rocky cavern, with a view out over the lagoon. Many guests come for the setting alone. It is quieter in this corner of the park, and the change in pace can feel welcome after the noise of the coasters.

The loop closes in Seuss Landing, and this is where the second surprise waits. Look closely at the buildings, the lamp posts, even the railings. Almost nothing here is straight. The designers followed the drawings of Doctor Seuss, the American children's author, whose world is full of wobbling towers and curling shapes. Palm trees bend at odd angles. Colours clash on purpose. Children ride a carousel of strange creatures, while adults often find themselves smiling at the craftsmanship.

Take a breath before you leave. Stand near the water and look back across the lagoon. From one spot, you might see the green Hulk track, the turrets of Hogwarts, the curves of Seuss Landing, and the lighthouse of Port of Entry all at once. They should not belong together. A comic book, a castle, a dinosaur gate, and a children's storybook. Yet the water ties them into one picture, and the walk between them is part of the story.

As you head back toward the exit, listen once more. The coaster rush, the splash of rafts, the music changing from one land to the next. Notice how each island hands its sound to the next one as you pass. Every pathway was designed with care. And when you step through Port of Entry again, the lighthouse is still there — the same welcome you passed in the morning, now at the end of your journey.
