Down a covered lane in the old trading quarter, shop window after shop window blazes with gold, necklaces, bangles, and chains stacked in glittering rows, more gold in one street than most people see in a lifetime. This is the Gold Souk, the traditional gold market of Dubai and one of its great sights, whether or not you intend to buy.

The souk sits in the old commercial district near the creek, a warren of lanes long given over to the gold trade. Dubai grew rich as a trading port, and gold has been one of its staple goods for generations, drawing buyers from across the region and beyond.

The scale of the display is the spectacle. Hundreds of shops line the lanes, their windows packed with jewellery of every weight and design, from delicate chains to enormous ceremonial pieces, all gleaming under bright lights.

Nearby lie other traditional markets, including a fragrant spice souk, so the gold souk is part of a wider old-market quarter that can be explored on foot, a complete contrast to the malls of the modern city.

As with any famous market, there are touts and imitators around the edges, offering fake designer goods or pressing you toward particular shops. A polite, firm no and a clear sense of what you want keep the experience pleasant.

The souk is busiest and most atmospheric in the evening, when the heat eases and the lanes fill with shoppers and the gold glitters under the lights. Daytime is quieter but hotter and less lively.

Even with no intention to buy, the souk is worth seeing for the sheer spectacle and the sense of the old trading city beneath the modern one. It is free to wander, and the displays alone are a memorable sight.
