The story

You settle onto the seat, put your feet on the pedals, and push. The little cart rolls forward on a pair of old steel rails. The track stretches ahead, straight and shining, into the trees. Behind you the station falls away. The only sound is the soft click of the wheels over the joints of the line.

This is the Gapyeong Rail Park. It is built on a railway that trains once used, an old part of the line that ran between Seoul and Chuncheon. When newer tracks were laid, this stretch was left empty. Rather than tear it up, the people here turned it into a place to ride for pleasure.

The vehicles are called rail bikes. They sit on the rails like small open carts, and you move them by pedaling, the way you would a bicycle. Two or four people can share one. There is no great speed and no danger of leaving the track. You set your own pace and roll along through the open countryside.

The route follows the river valley. On one side the Bukhan River runs wide and slow, green and calm between its banks. On the other side the hills rise, covered in trees. The old railway was laid along the easiest ground, close to the water, so the ride gives you a long and gentle view of the valley.

Part of the fun is the tunnels. The old line cuts straight through several hills, and you pedal into the dark openings one by one. Inside, the builders have hung colored lights and shining shapes. For a minute the daylight is gone and you roll through a glowing passage, cool and echoing, before you come out into the sun again.

There are bridges too. The track crosses the water on old steel spans, and for a moment you are out over the river with nothing close on either side. The view opens wide. Below you the water moves slowly. Ahead the rails run on toward the far bank and the green hills that rise beyond it.

The ride is easy enough for almost anyone. The ground is nearly level, so the pedaling is light. Families bring their children. Older visitors ride at a slow roll. Friends race a little between the quiet stretches. Because you cannot leave the track, you are free to look around as you go rather than watch the road.

The trip is not very long. The riding part covers a few kilometers, and at the far end you step off the cart. From there a different ride carries you back, so you do not have to pedal in both directions. The whole outing fits easily into part of a day, with time left for the rest of Gapyeong.

Each season changes the view from the rails. In spring the valley turns soft and green. In summer the trees are thick and the river cool. In autumn the hills along the track burn with red and gold leaves, which is the favorite time for many. In winter the bare branches and still water have their own plain beauty.

This area is easy to reach from Seoul, and many people make a full day of it. The rail park sits near the train line that still runs, so visitors come out from the city, ride the rails, and join it with other stops nearby. It has become one of the well-liked things to do in these hills.

There is a friendly mood along the line. The carts move at a walking speed, close enough that riders can call out to one another. In the tunnels, music sometimes plays along with the lights, and people laugh and sing in the dark. At the turning point there is usually a place to stop, stretch, and buy a drink before the return. The whole trip is gentle, social, and easy to share with the people you came with.

There is something pleasing in the idea behind it. A railway that had finished its working life was not thrown away. The tracks that once carried trains full of travelers now carry people who come only to enjoy the ride. The old line was given a second life, slower and lighter than the first one had been.

Near the end, let your feet rest for a moment and just roll. The river slides by on one side. The hills stand on the other. The wheels click below you, steady and slow. This was a working line once, busy with trains and timetables. Now it asks nothing of you but to look around and enjoy the going.
