The story

Along the river in the east of the city runs a long stretch of concrete wall, painted end to end with bright murals: a car bursting through, two leaders kissing, slogans of freedom. This is the East Side Gallery, the longest surviving piece of the Berlin Wall, turned after its fall into an open-air gallery of art and memory.

For nearly thirty years the wall divided the city, a guarded barrier of concrete that cut through streets and families and stood for the division of a continent. When it fell at the end of the 1980s, most of it was quickly torn down.

This long stretch, beside the river, was kept, and in the months after the wall opened, artists from around the world were invited to paint its eastern face, turning a symbol of oppression into a canvas of celebration and protest.

The result is more than a kilometre of murals, over a hundred works, ranging from the joyful to the political, that have become some of the most famous images of the wall's end and of the city's rebirth.

The best-known paintings have become icons in their own right: a battered eastern-bloc car breaking through the concrete, and two communist leaders locked in a fraternal kiss, images reproduced around the world.

Walking the length of the gallery is both an art walk and a history lesson, the murals on one side and, on the other, the river and the modern city that has grown up since the wall came down.

The paintings have faded, been damaged, and been repainted over the years, and parts of the surrounding area have been redeveloped, so the gallery sits in tension with the booming city around it, a preserved scar amid new building.

It is an open, free, outdoor site, walkable at any time, though it is busiest by day, and it runs through a lively eastern district full of cafes, bars, and nightlife.

The gallery is a reminder, in a city that has largely erased the wall, of how recently Berlin was divided, and of the moment when ordinary people brought the barrier down.

For all the crowds and the faded paint, standing before the murals on a real surviving stretch of the wall, by the river, brings the history closer than any museum case, and the freedom it celebrates feels hard-won.

Walk the painted wall from end to end, find the famous images among the hundred, and let the history of division and release settle as you go. When you reach the end and the modern city resumes, the long grey wall, now bright with paint, stays behind you as a kept memory.
